PRECIPICE

// introduction

PRECIPICE is a bold new musical that leaps between the near present and a world 400 years from now - a world reshaped by the choices we make today. It’s a story about crisis, hope, and what it means to stand on the edge of disaster and still imagine a future.

It is written collaboratively by six writers: Stu Barter (Talkshow), Rachel Bellman (These Demons), Darren Clark (Olivier Award winning writer of Benjamin Button), Annabelle Lee Revak (Windsong), Shaye Poulton Richards (Lies All The Way Down), and Timelapse Artistic Director Adam Lenson.

Our unique development methodology for the show looks to reframe processes around writing musicals and takes inspiration from television writers' rooms and band rehearsals. The initial provocation for our first show is The Doomsday Clock. This is a symbol first created in 1947 by the board of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists that speaks to the likelihood of a man-made global catastrophe. The time of the clock is established in January of each year. It is currently set at 89 seconds before midnight. The board monitors new developments in life sciences and technology that could inflict irrevocable harm to humanity. The piece will explore multiple interwoven stories of people affected by nuclear risk, climate change, and disruptive technologies.

We are working with a project archivist CJ Simon to communicate our work on the piece and to share news about process, learnings and outcomes.
